What is PCOS?

Polycystic ovaries, where multiple follicles are seen on the ovaries, are common and seen in up to 1 in 3 women. Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a condition where women with polycystic ovaries experience other symptoms, which occurs in 5-15% of women.

 

At our practice we are able to diagnose PCOS, and offer both conservative and medical management options.

Symptoms of PCOS may include:

  • Irregular periods

  • Signs of high levels of testosterone, including:

    • Acne

    • Greasy skin

    • Increased body hair (hirsuitism)

    • Thinning of head hair

  • Weight gain

  • Mood swings

  • Fertility difficulties

What to expect at your appointment:

  • Consultation with one of our female consultant gynaecologists

  • Thorough history and pelvic examination

  • Transvaginal ultrasound scan

  • Blood tests for hormonal profiling

  • Written medical report which can be posted or emailed to yourself and health professional(s) of your choice

  • Discussion regarding conservative management plans

  • Prescription arrangement

  • Notification of results of any test

  • Fertility advice, if required
